Throughout time Los Angeles stayed mainly within its 73 km square land grant. But this all changed in the 1890's.  The city limits remain visible to this day and the north-south pattern is shifter approximately 15 degrees east surrounding the well known downtown area. Some of the first additions to L.A. include Highland Park, the South Los Angeles area and Garvanza. In 1906 the approval of the Port of Los Angeles and a change in state law allowed a crooked strip of land called the Harbor Gateway. Cities such as San Pedro and Wilmington were added in 1909 and the growth continued when famous Hollywood was added in 1910. This then created the "barbell" shape of the city. At this time Colegrove, Cahuenga and Los Feliz were also annexed to the city. The Los Angeles area almost tripled in 1915 when the Sand Fernando Valley along with the Palms district were added. Although the city contunued spreading out, the Schindler-Chace House was sited in a largely undeveloped part of L.A. County which was later incorperated as West Hollywood.
